T29 Overview of + / - / ?



Topic 29      Overview of Positive /Negative statements| Interrogatives
There are 4 main types of Positive / Negative statements | Interrogatives.  The types of tense-verb decide the type of Positives / Negatives | Interrogatives

I.  Verb-to-be:  Simple Present Tense | Simple Past Tense

A.  Positive Statements: 
a)  Simple Present Tense

B.  Negative Statements
For Verb-to-be of  Simple Present Tense and Simple Past Tense, you just put ‘not’ after à am |is |are |was |were | + not  àto form Negative Statements.

C.  Interrogatives
For Verb-to-be of Simple Present Tense and Simple Past Tense, to form interrogatives, you just put ----- am |is |are |was |were | before the [S].

I am a pilot.  I am not a dentist.  Am I a photographer?
I was angry with them.  I was not happy with them.  Was I excited to hear the news?
You are John.  You are not Paul.  Are you George?

You were noisy just now.   You were not quiet.                    Were [you] nosey, too?

They were disobedient.     They were not co-operative.        Were [they] naughty.                                    

II.  Ordinary Verbs:  Simple Present Tense | Simple Past Tense
Ordinary verbs which indicate a doing of an action.

A.  Positive Statements:

C.  Interrogatives
To form interrogatives, just put ‘have/ has | had’ before the subject, [S].

2.  Present Perfect Tense |  Past Perfect Tense

B.  Negative Statements                                                                           
Like ‘have/ has |had’ of Simple Present Tense and Simple Past Tense, you also put ‘not’ after ‘have /has | had’ for Present Perfect Tense / Past Perfect Tense to form Negative Statements.

a)  Present Perfect Tense

C.  Interrogatives
For ‘have/ has |had’, you just put them before [S] to form interrogatives.

IV.  Modal Auxiliary Verbs

To form negative statements, just put ‘not’ after modal auxiliary verbs.

C.  Interrogatives
To form interrogatives, just put modal auxiliary verbs before the subject [S].

3.  [Jack] may go travelling next month.  [He] mayn’t visit Hong Kong this time.           
     May [he] borrow your luggage? 
4.  [Hassan] might buy another car.  [Hassan] mightn’t buy the same brand of
     national car. 
5.  [I] shall inform them of the meeting.  [I] shan’t be late this time. 
     Shall [I] send SMS to them, too?
6.  [You] should obey the school rules and regulations.  [You] should not break
     them.   Should [you] apologise?            
7.  Maria will attend the countdown gathering.  She won’t attend Jean’s birthday. 
      Will she take part in the competition?
8.  Tina would go to electrical shops to look for an oven.  She would not buy
      straight away.  Would she buy a gadget to make yogurt?
9.  They must keep the place clean at all times.  They must not litter where they
     like.   Must they sweep and mop the place every day?
10.  The workers ought to be hygienic in preparing the food.  They ought not to
       touch the food.  Ought they to cover the food?
