T28 Imperatives



Topic 28      Imperative
The speaker uses imperatives when he gives commands / makes requests to the second person ‘you (singular) / you (plural)’.

I.  Be + adjective                                 Be good.
    Don’t be + adjective                         Don’t  be naughty.
II. Please +V  (Root Verb)                    Please speak gently.
    V…….., please.                                 Speak gently , please.
III. Don’t + V (root verb), please.                   Don’t shout, please
      = Please don’t V                             Please don’t shout.

I.  Be + adjective
    Be good.  Be a good boy. 
    Be polite.
    Be punctual.
    Be kind.   Don’t be cruel.
    Be fast.  

    Don’t be naughty.
    Don’t be rude.    
    Don’t be late.
    Don’t be cruel.
    Don’t be fussy.

II.  Please + V……………..
     Please pick up the rubbish.  Pick up the rubbish, please.
     Please answer the doorbell.  Answer the doorbell, please.
     Please answer the telephone.  Answer the telephone, please.
     Please speak louder.  Speak louder, please.
     Please turn down the volume of the radio a little bit.  Thank you.

III.  Don’t + V….., please.  Please don’t + V………,please.
       Don’t disturb the things, please.  Please don’t disturb the things.
       Don’t enter the hall without permission, please.
