Topic 4



Topic 4                            The Future Tenses                           
There are 4 tenses in the future time.  You have learnt the Simple Future Tense and the Future Continuous Tense in Gear 1 and 2.  Hence, there are two tenses to be reviewed and the Future Perfect Tense and the Future Perfect Continuous Tense to be viewed here.

a)  The Simple Future Tense
b)  The Future Continuous Tense
c)  The Future Perfect Tense
d)  The Future Perfect Continuous Tense

The Verb Pattern
a)  The Simple Future Tense  (the Simple Present / Past Tense)
     i)  We use the Simple Future Tense to talk about an action that will 
          take place in the future.
               [Leena] will buy a computer next month.
   
ii)  To predict  a future action / event
           [The prices of most goods] will go up after election.           

     i)  Verb-to-be
          [S]  shall / will  be

          [I / We]  shall be
          [You / You /  He / She / It / They] will be

    ii)   Ordinary Verbs
          [S] shall / will F1                      

          [I / We] shall F1
          [You / You / He / She / It / They] will F1

     [I] shall be an hour early to school next Tuesday.        
     [I] shall mark the attendance for my form teacher.
     [Ziwei] will be upset to hear the news.
     [She] will feel restless.
     [Global warming] will result in frequent floods and droughts.

b)  The Future Continuous Tense   (Present / Past Continuous Tense)
We use the Future Continuous Tense to show an action which will be going on at a certain time in the future.
  
     The Verb Pattern
     [S] shall / will be F2

      [I / We] shall be F2
      [You / You / He / She / It / They] will be F2                                             10
                                                                                                    
      [Tina] will be playing (zero- point) with (us) at 5 pm this coming Sunday.    
      [They] will have a great time together.
      [Ashiah] will pass up (her project) next Wednesday. 
      [She] will be doing (the work) with (her friends) at 3 pm tomorrow.
                                                                                                                  
c)  The Future Perfect Tense   ( the Present / Past Perfect Tense )
We use the Future Perfect Tense to show an action that will be completed at a certain time in the future. 

     It is usually used with a time expression like:
     by next Monday / week / month / year 
     by the time she reaches there
      [S] shall/ will have F4 ……………        if [S] F1 / F1 + s / es
    
     The Verb Pattern:
      i)  Verb-to-be
          [S] shall / will have been
           
          [ I / We] shall have been
          [You / You / He / She / It / They] will have been

     ii)  Ordinary Verbs
          [S] shall / will have F4

           [ I / We] shall have F4
           [You / You / He / She / It / They] will have F4

         [Zher Meng] will e-mail a letter to Rita this evening.
          [He] will be telling (her) (how to use the Microsoft Power Point).
          [He] will have e-mailed (her) four times this week if [he] does it again.

          [Ping Ping] will sit for (the violin test) next Thursday.
          [She] will be sitting for (her test) on (theory) at 2 pm next Wednesday.
          [She] will have passed (her fourth grade) if [she] passes (it) again.

          [Lowina] will buy a book for Luke on his birthday.
          [She] will be attending (his birthday party) next Saturday.
          [Luke] will have written (all the invitation cards) by next Monday.

          d)  The Future Perfect Tense
          Alina’s mother weeds the garden every day.
          She is weeding the garden now.
          She has weeded the garden for an hour already.
          If she weeds the garden for half an hour, she will have been weeding it for  
          one and a half hours.
